Where are you from? What brought you to New York?
I am from Sydney, Australia. It's a very tight knit city and after being there for two decades of my life, I felt like I needed a break. I was already working in fashion, eCommerce and writing in Australia and wanted to further my career in this industry. I thought the best place to do this was New York... I was right!
You style and also write, but looking deeper I view you more as an artist. What influences your creative gut when you're assigned a project for Oyster Magazine or Assembly NY?
I'm not actually a stylist... I'm a writer and I take photos occasionally. I don't call myself an artist, I don't think it's necessary to put a label on what I'm doing and I just don't really view myself as someone who is creating art. Honestly, my true passion is writing. I love working with Aussie friends at Oyster — I think it's a really seamless and cool relationship. We are always on the same page. When thinking of subjects to feature, it's kind of a process of shortlisting people who are doing cool shit in New York, and taking them to my editors at Oyster. My Assembly projects are mainly photography focussed. It's a matter of me taking my perspective and re-sculpting it to fit the Assembly brand.
The way you take food products and turn them into apparel/shoes is cheeky yet so awesome. How did this project start?
Honestly, it's just a fun thing I do for LOL's and Instagram. Definitely not an art project or anything, just objects/concepts friends and I create when we're bored or fucking around.
Your Barbie project was such a great visual and also and totally reminds me of remixing all my barbies clothes and hair back in the day. What was your creativity like as a kid?
I was super into Barbies and every time my mom would visit the states, she would bring me a sick new toy. I remember there was this one workout Barbie with joints that I was super into. I always thought Barbie clothes were lame or didn't resonate with my style, so I would make them little dresses and sets out of Kleenex tissues and sticky tape.
What design newcomers are you excited about?
So many! Matthew Adams Dolan, Sandy Liang, LRS, Haal, MadeMe Alyx, Area...
Who are you listening to nowadays and if you could score the soundtrack for a day in your life, who'd be featured?
1. Young Thug
2. Young Thug
We all have our bad days in New York. What keeps you going despite the lows?
I love New York and haven't had any bad days as a result of the city. Everyone has shit days everywhere ... but things that keep me going include my friends, goldfish and parents. Also, if I'm having a crap day, I'll bluetooth connect my speaker to the neighbors in my building and play Crazy Frog v. loud.
